Gulu University, one of the five operating public universities in Uganda, opened its first academic semester in October 2002 with two faculties: the Faculty of Science Education and the Institute of Human Resource Development. Therefore, the Faculty of Science Education which was later transformed into Faculty of Education and Humanities is in essence a pioneer faculty.
The then Faculty of Science Education started with science subject combinations which included Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography, Economics, Sport Science and Technological Education. In its strategic plan of 2003/2004–2008/2009 and arising from the increasing demand for higher education, the Faculty envisioned a growing need in academic programmes, staffing and student enrolment. The Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, established in Gulu University in 2005, is mandated to train manpower at undergraduate and graduate levels, carry out research, and provide outreach services in all aspects of Agriculture right from primary production to marketing. It is strategically structured in six departments - Agronomy, Animal Production and Range Management, Biosystems Engineering, Environment and Natural Resource Management, Food Science and Postharvest Technology, and Rural Development and Agribusiness. The departments work together to contribute to community food security improvement, livelihoods and agricultural development in general.

The Faculty of Business and Development Studies was established in 2002 at the opening of Gulu University as the Institute of Human Resource Development. The Institute started with 4 academic programmes: Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Development Studies at degree level and Diploma in Development Studies and Diploma in Secretarial and Information Management at Ordinary Diploma level. Due to growth in the number of programmes, departments and disciplines of coverage, the Institute of Human Resource Development was upgraded to become the Faculty of Business and Development Studies in 2004.

The Institute of Research and Graduate Studies (IRGS) is an Institute of Gulu University whose main functions are to help students develop their research concepts, help them find tuition and research funds and process their dissertations to fruition of granting degrees. The IRGS also arranges for admission of graduate students who are Teaching Assistants and Lecturers to obtain placement in various universities to pursue Masters and PhD degrees. Such staff members are facilitated with tuition fees, research grants and are also granted study leave where necessary.Corollary to the above functions, the IRGS performs these functions under the guidance of the Board of Research, Graduate studies and Staff Development.
