A delegation from BOKU University in Austria, Caritas Corinthia and caritas gulu, visited Gulu University on the 10/03/2026 to explore opportunities for academic collaboration through research and other partnerships. The team, together with the Dean faculty of Agriculture and other faculty members met with professor George Openjuru, the vice chancellor of Gulu University, to learn about the university’s facilities, research programs, and community projects. The four parties are currently collaborating on an environmental bio technology project through supporting the community into developing bio gas technology.
During the meeting, the discussions focused on environmental biotechnology and sustainable solutions for rural communities. Researchers shared ideas on how biotechnology can help solve environmental challenges while improving livelihoods.

One of the key topics was the promotion of biogas technology. The vice chancellor discussed ways in which the university has been taking action in solving the issues of bio diversity through training farmers to collect cow dung and other organic waste to produce biogas for cooking and energy. This technology could reduce dependence on firewood and charcoal while providing a cleaner and more affordable source of energy.
He also highlighted on innovation research the university is working on which involves converting organic waste into charcoal briquettes. By transforming agricultural and household waste into charcoal, communities could access cheaper and more sustainable fuel, while also reducing environmental pollution.
In addition, the meeting explored the use of solar energy as another sustainable energy option that could complement biogas and waste-to-energy technologies.
The visit will continue with a tour of the university facilities and a shared commitment to strengthen collaboration in research, training, and sustainable environmental technologies that could benefit both the academic community and local farmers in Northern Uganda.
