Gulu University Multifunctional Research Laboratories is the state of art research laboratory established in 2018 and commissioned by His Excellency the president of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on 11th January 2020. The laboratory was funded by Government of Uganda through a loan from African Development Bank to the tune of USD 4.5 million with USD 2.5 million going toward the equipment and USD 2.0 million on the construction of the building. The major thrust of establishing GUMRL is to undertake tailor-made research in science-related disciplines and make science relevant in addressing the problems faced by the rural communities, as an absolute essential factor for the development that is central to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The laboratory currently has on-going scientific studies of SARS-CoV2, Malaria and Mosquito resistance studies, mycotoxin and food safety, Nodding syndrome among many other researches. The SARS-CoV-2 Laboratory underwent evaluation by Ministry of Health, World Health Organization (WHO) and in January 25th 2021, Ministry of Health officially accredited the laboratory to handle and test for SARS-CoV2 from the public.
