Gulu University Library was established in October 2002 on inception of the University and housed in a single room in the former DFI building currently occupied by the Academic Registrar’s office. However as of now the library has grown starting with the acquisition of a separate Main Library building on the Main campus in Laroo in 2006. Other sites expanded to over the years include: Faculty of Medicine (FOM) branch at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital; FOM Lacor campus; Kitgum campus; Faculty of Law and Hoima campus. Thanks to the ADB HEST programme, a new library building was completed in and launched in 2020.

Gulu University Library is fully associated with the philosophy of the University as prescribed in the vision and mission. The Library is mandated to generate and provide access to wide and relevant information suitable for attainment of the overall University Mission and enhancement of national developmental aspirations. With the University mission to provide access to quality higher education, training, research and innovations for the delivery of appropriate services towards community transformation and sustainable development, the Library has since 2002 expanded services to the greater Northern Uganda through branch libraries, faculty libraries and libraries supporting constituent colleges which are growing to independent Universities. Gulu University is publicly funded by Government. The Library therefore, is positioning itself to adopt open access to research and innovation. The Library provides a conducive environment for storage, preservation and conservation of research and innovation output. These services being adopted, are evidenced by the policies the Library is promoting. Notably, the Intellectual Property Management Policy, Institutional Repository Policy and Policy on Plagiarism. By identifying with National and International Library standards, the Library provides access to a wide range of information resources to it’s users as it moves towards the goal of being the leading academic institution for promotion of community transformation and industrialization for sustainable development.

The collection of the Library has grown over the years to over 40,000 books, theses, government publications acquired through local procurement as well as donations from our partners. Our branches are on the Main Campus, the New Library Building, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Medicine, Lacor Hospital as well as off-site campuses in Kitgum and Hoima.

Duties & Responsibilities

The University Library shall be responsible for the development, control, management and co-ordination of all library and information services of the University.

E-Resources
Other than print literature, Gulu University Library offers users access to global-quality academic textbooks and other research outputs. The e-Resources section is mandated to coordinate the acquisition, dissemination, and training on the use of management of these vital and expensive resources. Through partnerships with development partners and local initiatives at the national level, the University Library offers access to millions of academic peer-reviewed articles online.

User Services
This is one of the department/section in the Library that deals directly with the Users/Patrons. The services offered range from reference services and information desk services, these:
• General enquiries face-to-face reference services
• Registration of new members,
• Current Awareness Service and Selective Dissemination of Information.
• Reservation of Textbooks.

Africana Special Collection
The department was opened in 2006 as a division of the Main Library. Its purpose was to provide access to National imprint, Government documents, University research outputs and University publications to support research. Africana also provides research support services, and is responsible for the Institutional Repository and digitization of information materials. The section houses the Regional Centre for Legal deposit for Northern Uganda.

Technical, Orders and Systems Division
This Section carries out a number of services ranging from cataloging, classification, indexing, abstracting, compiling order lists for acquisition of information materials. The Department is also responsible for stock-taking (inventory control).Read More

Medical Library
The Medical Library provides access to specialized literature for health sciences to support medical education, research and health services. The Library comprises of two library locations. The Main Medical Library situated at the New Site of the Faculty of Medicine East of Gulu Regional Referral Hospital and a Reference Library at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor Campus West of the Centre of Gulu City.

The Library has range of spaces for comfortable reading and ICT access, including free internet for students and staff. We are the largest medical library in northern Uganda with rich diversity of information resources and qualified staff to support teaching and research programs at Gulu University Faculty of Medicine and the general community in the University catchment areas. We provide access to print medical literature, e-resources including e-books and journals.

Law Library
The Bachelor of Laws programme was launched in 2011 and was initially housed under the Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies at offsite campus within Gulu Town as a permanent home at the main campus was being erected. A separate resource Centre was opened at the premises to meet the Library needs of this young department. Growth of the collection gained tempo. In 2013, the department shifted to its current premises at the Main Campus including the Law collection. In the next year, the department was elevated to a Faculty with its own fully fledged Branch Library. The current Law Library premises have a sitting capacity of approximately 70 users offering a variety of services including Internet Access to Academic content at 10 wired access points as well as fairly fast wireless Internet access. Agricultural Library
The Faculty of Agricultural and environment Library provides specialized literature to support agricultural education, research as well as extension services. It is conveniently situated in the Faculty of Agriculture. It provides access to print and subscribed electronic resources.
