UBOS gives out 200 tablets to Gulu University


The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has given out 200 tablets to Gulu University to aid in research, data production, collection, processing and analysis. These are among the 120,000 tablets government procured and used during the Uganda National Population and Housing Census 2024.

The UBOS Executive Director, Dr. Chris Mukiza who handed over the tablets to Gulu University and other education and cultural institutions on June 30th said the tablets will enhance participation of these institutions in producing and analysing data collected, hence improving quality.

Dr. Allen Kabagenyi, the UBOS Board member and Public Health Statistician also joined the ED and emphasized on the importance of quality in higher education institutions in Uganda noting that the tablets will act as research tools for those in academia to be able to produce quality data.
Prof. David Okello Owiny, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Gulu University who represented the Vice Chancellor, Prof. George Ladaah Openjuru commended UBOS for their generosity and said these will help both students and staff in data collection, analysis and management.

“The tablets will go a long way in aiding Gulu University students during their training in data collection, analysis and management. In this digital era, the tablets will ease data collection and transmission, and we pledge to make the most appropriate use of these tablets,” Prof. Owiny said.

The DVC also added that the tablets will help the university to achieve its vision and mission in transforming the community.
“In line with its Motto of “For Community Transformation,” Gulu University is an engaged University working with Communities in its teaching and research and community outreach programs. These have enhanced the quality of our graduates who are usually appreciated by community for participating in solving their problems. The tablets will enable us to continue transforming the community,” the DVC adds.

The DVC was accompanied by other university staff including David Obol Otori, the University Secretary, Perez Matsiko, Chief ICT Officer, and Jimmy Okeny, the Store Officer.

Education institutions that received the tablets include Makerere University with 700 tablets, Makerere University Business School, Mbarara University and Kyambogo University each receiving 350 tablets. Gulu and Lira universities each received 200, Soroti University got 150, and the National Council for Higher Education received 75 tablets.

On the other hand, four cultural institutions also received the tablets. Buganda Kingdom received 1,000 tablets, Bunyoro Kingdom 550 tablets, Busoga Kingdom 500, and Rwenzururu went away with 120 tablets.
