Gulu University Hosts 6th Annual AUUS Forum


Gulu University has successfully hosted the 6th Annual Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) Forum. The 6th AUUS Forum which ran from 12th to 13th June at the Gulu University New Library was held under the theme “Implementation of the AUUS Strategic Plan.”

While officially opening the event, the Gulu University Vice Chancellor, Prof. George Ladaah Openjuru expressed pride in Gulu University’s growing involvement in regional and international university sports.

“I am proud of how Gulu University is embracing opportunities in international sports activities. We shall continue striving for excellence and keep winning,” he remarked.

He also announced the university’s ongoing plans to construct a modern sports stadium worth 13.5billion shillings with support from Government through the National Council of Sports.

“We are optimistic that the Gulu University Sports Stadium will be completed and operational by 2028, positioning us to host prestigious events such as the East Africa University Sports Games,” the Vice Chancellor added.

This sports facility is expected to be utilized by African Cup of Nations-AFCON Players as Uganda joins other East African Countries in co-hosting the AFCON 2027.

Mrs. Peninnah Kabenge Aligawesa, the AUUS President emphasized the importance of AUUS Forum noting that it is a key platform for discussing policy implementation, enhancing sports infrastructure, and strengthening inter-university collaboration through athletics and physical education.

The Gulu University Dean of Students, Dr. Stella Ameru Eduan appreciated the AUUS team for choosing Gulu University to host the 6th Forum this year.

In 2024, Gulu University team that comprised of the Deputy Dean of Students Pamela Peace Okwir, Sports Tutor Francis Opiyo, and Chairperson Games Union Waiswa John Paul received the host button from Soroti University which hosted the 5th AUUS Forum from 29th to 31st May 2024.

The 6th AUUS Forum brought together delegations from 18 universities across Uganda. Participants included Deans of Students, Deans of Sports, University Sports trainers, and student representatives from institutions such as Ndejje University, Nkumba University, Makerere University, Kampala International University, Muni University, among others.
