Gulu University holds High-Level meeting with Chinese Delegation
Gulu University on 26th June, 2025 hosted a high-level delegation from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Uganda, marking a significant step towards strengthening bilateral educational and research partnerships.
The visiting team included Minister-Counsellor Fan Xuecheng and Song Jinpeng, Third Secretary and Political Attaché at the Embassy.
During the meeting held at the Gulu University Council Boardroom, the two parties engaged in discussions on a broad range of potential collaborative areas aimed at enhancing the university’s academic and infrastructural development.
The Gulu University Vice Chancellor, Prof. George Ladaah Openjuru. welcomed the delegation and outlined several strategic priorities for Gulu University, which included strengthening ties with Chinese universities to foster academic exchange and research collaboration.
He also highlighted on promoting the study of Chinese language and culture to bridge communication and cultural understanding including working on Curriculum development focused on structure, context, and alignment with global standards.
The VC stressed the need for enhancing higher education governance through policy benchmarking and best practices, boosting research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, particularly in areas relevant to Uganda’s development needs.
Commercializing innovation and advancing agricultural research for rural transformation, improving infrastructure, and advocating for easier access to the Chinese Embassy to streamline academic engagement were also key among issues highlighted by Prof. Openjuru.
On the other hand, Minister Xuecheng highlighted China’s commitment to deepening educational ties through the ongoing People-to-People Exchange Scholarship Programme, which prioritizes science and technology courses like Engineering.
He praised the achievements of Gulu University students, particularly noting the 2023/2024
Huawei ICT competition in Shenzhen, China, on 26 May 2024, where the students won the Grand Prize, the first of its kind in the history of Uganda since the inception of Huawei ICT competitions in 2015 making it a remarkable success in the country.
Gulu University also won Gold award in the 2024-2025 Efficiency for Access Design Challenge for their innovative hydrogel solar evaporator design, a sustainable solution that purifies contaminated water using solar energy and hydrogel materials.
Minister-Counsellor Xuecheng also presented China’s new model of international relations, emphasizing mutual respect, openness, fairness, and win-win cooperation. He noted that community service and development remain a cornerstone of this vision, especially through collaborative initiatives in ICT, research, and innovation.
The visit marks a promising beginning to what both parties described as a mutually beneficial relationship. Follow-up engagements are expected to explore concrete areas for partnership implementation, including scholarship placements, joint research projects, and infrastructure
support.
