Gulu University VC tips African University leaders in TAGDev1.0 Experiences

Prof. Openjuru George Ladaah, the Gulu University Vice-Chancellor has told African University Vice-Chancellors that his administration was able to succeed in the implementation of the program “Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development” (TAGDev 1.0) by re-envisioning teaching in the direction of producing job creators and not job seekers.

Prof. Openjuru was addressing Vice-Chancellors and Education stakeholders in Africa during the second RUFORUM Triennial Conference, held on July 12, 2024, at the Mercure Hotel in Windhoek, Namibia, where TAGDev 2.0 was officially launched.

He added that the approach and the experience have holistic institutionalised transformation on the graduates from Gulu University.
“We changed the way of teaching, away from preparing students just to pass examinations and we introduced entrepreneurship where we trained them not to look for employers to employ them but rather to look at resources around them and make sustainable use of it for their livelihood.”

He said some students started adding value in local resources like shea-butter, as others invested in the baking industry among others, based on their entrepreneurial niche.
According to Prof.Openjuru, the University guided the students to ensure that they legally register their start ups so that the gains are sustained as life changing for the graduates.

Gulu and Egerton Universities in Uganda and Kenya have been applauded for the success of TAGDEV 1.0 based on the commitment invested in the program heavily supported by the two Vice-Chancellors of the institutions. (Prof.Openjuru, George Ladaah and Prof. Isaac Kibwage)

Building on the success and lessons from TAGDev 1.0, the second phase of the program, in partnership with RUFORUM and the Mastercard Foundation, will expand to include numerous universities across the continent. Participating institutions will include Africa University in Zimbabwe, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Morocco, the University of Bamenda in Cameroon, the University of the Free State in South Africa, the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, the University of Eldoret in Kenya, Malawi University of Science and Technology, Uganda Martyrs University, the National University of Agriculture in Benin, and the University of Port-Harcourt in Nigeria, alongside the original partners, Gulu and Egerton Universities.

TAGDev 2.0 aims to continue fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment, enabling students from diverse backgrounds to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s growth and development.

Thorough cleaning happening at the Gulu University Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies. Having peaceful surroundings help us to have a peaceful mind. Well done team.

Enjoying his book "War in Northern Uganda: A Journalist's Account" which is a compilation of his articles written & published in @DailyMonitor in 1997 when he was still a bureau chief. Great resource for historians, researchers & academia interested in war & peace processes.
