Gulu University Covilyce won 2nd best prize in the 21ST EAC Exhibition in Tanzania
Gulu University Covilyce I Natural Herbal Products was the best exhibitor from Uganda and won the second-best product award for the 21st East African Community Micro and Small Enterprise Trade fair held in Mwanza, Tanzania which came to an end on the 12th December 2021.
That means Gulu University product was able to beat over 1,500 exhibitors of different products from Kenya, Burundi, South Sudan, Rwanda, Uganda.
They followed Geoffrey Kiiro from Kenya who was the best in the East African Community with his Crafts and wood creative design and third in the region was Kavimo Limited who deals in Textile and Fabrics from Tanzania.
During the closing ceremony on Sunday, Ruth Simba, the head of panel of Judges said the 12 judges with 2 from each member states recommended Covilyce clear creativity and innovations towards curbing COVID-19 which negatively affected businesses across the globe.
The judges also commented that the innovation from Dr Lamwaka Alice Veronica of Gulu University sets clear zeal that every problem can be solved with local raw materials and added that Gulu University has challenged all Universities across the region by being available amongst business community as the only University in the Trade fair that took 10 days from 2nd to 12th December 2021.
Prof. Openjuru George Ladaah the Gulu University Vice-Chancellor said the award would challenge the University to do more in solving community problems since the university is deeply rooted in community transformation as a philosophical approach to societal challenges.
Gulu University Secretary, Obol David Otori on hearing the news said the award is a big investment to Uganda as a country and way forward to expediting clinical trial on the herbal remedy for COVID-19.
Godfrey Tukamubona Principal Small and Medium Enterprise officer in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperative who was the Coordinator of Uganda Exhibitors in Mwanza said Uganda brought 134 exhibitors who came from different sectors including herbal, carpentry, leather products, food processing and culture.
“As Uganda, we are looking forward to host the 22nd EAC exhibition and this result is motivating and we expect to have more than 500 Ugandans participating next year”. Said Godfrey.
This year’s exhibition with the theme ‘’Promoting Quality and Innovation to Enhance EAC MSMES competitiveness and post Covid 19 Recovery’’ saw National Arts and Cultures came second and Atiak Sugar Out Growers Cooperative Society Limited from Amuru came third amongst 134 Ugandan exhibitors.
Last EAC exhibition took place in 2019 in Kigali, Rwanda before COVID19 hampered the exhibition in 2020 and Uganda is the official host of next year’s exhibition involving all the members state of Kenya, South Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania
