Gulu University Students trained to be ‘Plant Doctors’
Gulu University Faculty of Agriculture and Environment final year students have undergone through “Plant Doctors” training. The training was intended to help enhance the students’ knowledge in using cultural and scientific methods to diagnose plant pest problems and offer proper solutions.
The one-week training was led by Prof. Habert Talwana of Makerere University under the auspices of CAB International and the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), assisted by other Staff from the Department of Agronomy who included Mr. Kabi Samuel, Dr. Kawube Geofrey and Mr. Otim Fred.
Flanked by Dr. Okello Collins, the Dean of the Faculty, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. David Okello Owiny hailed the trainers and affirmed that the University is committed to supporting such training to transform the community.
He said there is high potential for mechanised Agriculture in Northern Uganda but farmers are taking poor decisions that aid resistance to pesticides.
He welcomed the decision to make Gulu University a training center for plant Doctors to help the community. He thanked Prof. Habert for the collaboration with Gulu University.
