Gulu University-Main Campus in Gulu City on the 18th of October 2023 evening between 4:15pm to 6:00pm experienced heavy stormy rainfall that damaged a number of roofs, uprooted trees, and two huge tents were blown off.

The affected roofs include the Accounts Section in the Faculty of Business and Development Studies, Offices at the Faculty of Education and Humanities, in front of the Academic Registrar Building, and the Main Library among others. The wind also uprooted a tree behind the Administration block destroying the water reservoir tank.

The forested vegetation with clear underneath that students use for reading nicknamed ‘Garamba’ also suffered where many trees fell.

The falling trees also in turn smashed windscreen and mirrors of both staff and student cars that were parked at the University Yards.

Obol David Otori, the Gulu University Secretary announced that electricity would be temporarily kept off campus just in case some live wires were hanging low.

He also added that the main library roof was immediately repaired to avoid further damage to the books, confirming that security was boosted as part of the perimeter fence behind the finance building was destroyed by the falling trees.

The University Management led by Prof. Okello David Owiny the current acting Vice-Chancellor held an emergency meeting in the morning of 19th October 2023 and did an inspection of the affected areas at the main campus.

“Colleagues, we have a problem, and this problem calls for togetherness as the rain destroyed both the University and personal belongings of the staff and the students”. Prof.Owiny submitted.
“Above all, we are happy there was no human casualty “. He added.

Top Management also directed a comprehensive audit of the damages by the Estates Department to quantify the loss.

The University also agreed to inform the Government formally of the loss after a thorough report on needed resources to fix the damages.
