Gulu University among 24 Universities in UCU for Inter-University Games
Gulu University is among the Twenty-Four Universities that camped at Uganda Christian University in the ongoing 19th Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) games which started officially on December 17th going up to 21st 2023.
Other Universities include Kabale, Soroti, Busitema, Makerere, Makerere Business School, Uganda Christian University, and Bishop Stuart among others. There are several games for competition ranging from Football, Basketball, Chess, Netball, Woodball, Athletics, Badminton, and Scrabble.
The Sports delegation of Gulu University are competing in Basketball, Chess, Badminton, Scrabble, Netball, Athletic Track and Field events only.
During the opening ceremony on the evening of December 17th, Uganda Christian University management led by their Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi assured the visiting instituitions of the highest level of hospitality and boosted the visitors to enjoy the ambiance of the Campus having one of the best sports facilities in the country.
Penninah Kabenge the President of the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) games cautioned the students to go for friendly rivalry while maintaining mutual respect at the pitch.
“These games should make us reflect on the journey that brought us to this point but to our host, we are really grateful”. Remarked Peninah.
She also showed excitement that the women are getting interested in sports where she cited that 40 percent of the participants or players are female and 46 percent of the officials of the games are also female, an indicatory that women are completely enrolling and embracing the various sports.
She prayed that the 19th AUUS games would inspire greatness and bring more sports giants for Uganda.
David Katende Semakula, the Assistant General Secretary at Uganda National Council for Sports who was the chief guest advised the students not to take the competition lightly since it’s the platform where most of the gigantic sports names of Uganda have come from while citing Joshua Cheptegei.
According to him, the National Council of Sports has plans of partnering with universities to develop sports facilities and asked them to always share with the Council infrastructural plan for sports facilities in institutions.
