Gulu University hosted a dynamic gathering of students, academics, and national leaders during the Acholi Students Union Forum under the theme “A Path to Ethical Leadership.” The event brought together representatives from leading institutions and government to champion values of accountability, inclusivity, and transformation among Uganda’s future leaders.

The event was graced by distinguished guests, including the Deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG), Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria, who was the chief guest, She delivered an inspiring message on accountability, trust, empathy, and inclusivity, urging students to engage in open dialogue and lead with integrity.
“Your actions today will contribute to shaping the leaders of tomorrow,” stated Dr. Patricia Achan, Patron of the Acholi students’ union, emphasizing the importance of humility, continuous learning, and meaningful connections.

Rwot Yusuf Adek and RDC Amolatar district,Rwotlonyo Okello Odoki Francis, also addressed the gathering. Counsel Gimara Francis the former president of the Uganda Law Society, provided legal insights into ethical leadership and national governance.
The forum was officially opened by Dr. Okello Collins, the Dean Faculty of Agriculture and Environment at Gulu University, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, representing the host institution.
With a focus on the “Gulu University Standards for Community Transformation,” the forum showcased student contributions to community engagement, particularly in the areas of agriculture and health. Dr. Okello Collins shared experiences from the field training students on farms and also highlighted the significance of clinical clerkships and their role in shaping leadership within the health sector in Gulu City.

Speakers emphasized the transition from academic training to leadership readiness, calling for idealism, integrity, and strategic thinking.
Participants explored topics such as “Structural Leader Narratives and Transition” and “Exploiting Windows of Entrepreneurship Opportunities.” The session encouraged students to move beyond dreaming and instead pursue tangible success through research, consultation, and collaboration.

Dr. Miriam Apiyo, a practicing pediatrician and medical director of Case Hospital, offered mentorship on professionalism and integrity in the medical field.
“Live with integrity, present yourself the way you want to be perceived,” she advised. Emphasizing the need to build strong networks, form strategic alliances, and commit to ethical values, the forum marked a significant step in empowering Uganda’s youth to become leaders of substance and service.
The take-home for the youth throughout the event was, ‘Don’t be mere dreamers; seek success with a touch of humility.”
