Japan University Donates Microscope to Gulu University
Associate Professor David Okello Owiny the Gulu University Deputy Vice-Chancellor has on Tuesday 16th May 2023 received two Microscopes from Juntendo Medical University in Japan in appreciation and strengthening of an ongoing collaboration in Malaria Research between Gulu University and Japanese Universities which started in 2013 comprising of Juntendo and Osaka Universities in Japan.
The microscopes were delivered by Prof. Toshihiro Mira at the Gulu University Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine at Lacor Hospital, according to him the donation is a gift to support equipping the laboratory that they are using in their research. ‘’Many students want to see the parasites with the microscope and we thought we could contribute to support learning in this laboratory’’. Prof. Mira said.
Dr. Ocaya Anthony the Deputy Dean Faculty of Medicine and Prof. Odongo Emmanuel Aginya all agreed that the donation is timely and would indeed support the learning process in the Laboratory since the University Microscopes don’t tally with the number of students who normally use the laboratory in the Faculty.
“We thought you might get us used ones because it was still okay but we don’t take for granted that instead, you have decided to buy brand new ones, thank you very much”. Dr. Ocaya appreciated.
Gulu University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. David Okello Owiny who moved with a team of staff from stores and Audit departments, directed them to record and engrave the microscopes as the property of Gulu University.
“Thanks for coming and working with Gulu University and this donation is still in the right direction, we believe that when government fulfills its promise to us of a teaching University hospital, we shall reduce the pressure currently in this Laboratory”. Prof. Owiny submitted.
This collaboration between Gulu University and Japan Universities which started in 2013 is undertaking a deeper inquiry on the epidemiology of Malaria Drug Resistance in Northern Uganda.
