Gulu University Wins Grand Prize in the 2023-2024 Huawei ICT Competitions

Gulu University has won a Grand Price in the 2023-2024 Huawei ICT Global Competitions in Shenzhen, China, on 26 May, 2024.

Aber Mary Mercy and Odoch Peter Acellam who are final year students of Computer Science and Business Computing respectively placed the University on the global map by winning the Grand Prize of the Practice and Innovation Competitions.

This is the first Grand Prize in the history of Uganda since the inception of Huawei ICT competitions in 2015 making it a remarkable success in the country. The duo who were among the13 students flagged off by the First lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni to represent Uganda in the Huawei ICT global competition on Thursday, May 16th, 2024, at State House Nakasero won the grand prize in the Network Track beating their competitors across the globe.

The joyous Acellam said it was a tough competition with thousands of students fighting for the same prize but their commitment and support from Uganda made them sail through the river of success with much ease and brought the prize home.

The Ambassador of Uganda to the People’s Republic of China H.E Oliver Wonekha congratulated all the students for their remarkable achievement and encouraged them to help in the development of the country’s ICT progress. According to Huawei’s website, this year’s competition attracted more than 170,000 students from over 2,000 universities and colleges across more than 80 countries and regions, making it the largest offline competition since its launch. More than 160 teams, adding up to a total of 470 contestants from 49 different countries and regions, made it through national and regional competitions to reach this year’s global final, held in Shenzhen from May 23-26.

The Huawei ICT Competition is an annual contest held by Huawei for global university and college students. Through the competition, Huawei aims to provide students with an international platform for healthy competition and exchange of ideas. Since its launch in 2015, the competition has helped students enhance their ICT knowledge and practical skills, while also increasing their ability to innovate by using new technologies and platforms. The ultimate goal is to advance technological development and facilitate digital inclusion around the world.
