Gulu University Receives a Multi-Billion Danish Project

Gulu University is in collaboration with University of Copenhagen in Denmark on a project called ‘Vulnerability to Climate Change and Adaptation in Conflict-affected Areas (VUCCA)’ with a total funding of UGX 5.4 billion.

On Wednesday 17th August 2023, members of management headed by Gulu University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Openjuru George Ladaah met the project team including those from Denmark to get more insights into the project.

Gulu University project team was headed by Dr. Expedito Nuwategeka, the project Co-Principal Investigator and the Danish team was headed by Prof. Kasper Hoffmann the Principal Investigator, and Prof. Marieve Pouliot all from the University of Copenhagen.

The joint project team briefed management that the project will be providing three fully-funded PhD pieces of research to investigate how smallholder farmers in the Acholi region are exposed to various forms of vulnerability to climate change, how they adapt to climate change, and how they are affected by policy issues in their attempt to adapt to climate change.

“The PhDs will be jointly supervised by senior researchers from Gulu University and University of Copenhagen”. Dr. Expedito said.

According to the team, the project shall also organize and sponsor three international conferences on climate change vulnerability and adaptation in conflict-affected areas to be hosted by Gulu University in Gulu City.

Prof. Openjuru L. George the Gulu University Vice-Chancellor Welcomed the project and said management already has existing partnership with the Danish Universities and institutions which include Building Stronger University (BSU) in phase IV now and UPCHAIN project.

“You could have chosen to partner with other Universities and not us, hence we don’t take this lightly and as management, we shall do all that is necessary to ensure the smooth running of the project to accomplish its objectives”. Openjuru submitted.
