Gulu University Promotes 14 Academic Staff
Gulu University has promoted 14 academic staff to positions of Professors, Associate Professors, and Senior Lecturers.
These promotions saw two academic staff promoted from positions of Associate Professors to Professors, six from Senior Lecturers to Associate Professors, and the remaining six promoted from Lecturers to Senior Lecturers.
Prof George Ladaah Openjuru, the Vice Chancellor of Gulu University while handing over appointment letters to the promoted staff on Wednesday 25th September, 2024 from the University Council Boardroom congratulated them for the hard work and commitment which earned them the promotions.
“I encourage you to continue with the hard work, commitment, tolerance, and dedication to excellence,” Prof. Openjuru said during the handover ceremony of promotional letters to the 14 staff.
The VC said new positions come with new responsibilities and the promoted staff should therefore, work harder, support one another, publish more articles, inspire others and mentor the young ones to engage into great research projects.
Prof. Wilfred Lajul who was promoted from Assoc. Professor to full Professor shared the same sentiment with the VC in regards to supporting fellow staff and young ones to thrive in the world of academics.
“In academics, there is no rivalry but supplementarity. We supplement one another, and that is the kind of support we need. We have a very big duty to the young generations by giving our valuable time to them. These people need a lot of support,” says Prof. Lajul.
He added that in order to put the university to the top, those in academics should publish more articles both as individuals and collaboratively.
“Publications can be done individually, or as a team. Let’s explore the two possibilities. This is what makes the name of the university goes higher and shine”, he adds.
Mr. David Obol Otori, the Gulu University Secretary appreciated the staff for being patient with the university throughout the entire process of promotion especially those who were recommended for promotions in the last financial year.
“The promotional process is a bit lengthy right from the applications processes but the reason for the delay was on account of inadequate wage. Last year, there was harmonization of nomenclatures and salary scales in all public universities, and that demanded additional resources. So, we could not implement immediately, the promotions of the officers who had been recommended,” Mr. Otori explains.
He further said the university was able to carry out implementations of in the current financial year for those recommended and moving them to the new salary scale after engaging the Ministry of Finance and getting supplementary on the wage bill.
The Gulu University Chief Human Resource Management, Ms. Christine Immaculate Apio appreciated the Human Resource team for working tirelessly in vetting the promoted staff whose applications for promotions went through rigorous processes before the vetting committee.
“I thank the vetting Committee because without their efforts, we wouldn’t be able to have this kind of occasion. I thank office of the US and the strategic leadership of the Vice Chancellor”, Ms. Apio shares her gratitude.
Mrs. Theresa Mary Obbo, the Gulu University Chair Council congratulated the promoted staff upon the milestone in their professional journey.
“This is a clear sign of personal-professional growth and development. Council and our great institution are proud of you,” Mrs. Obbo shared her heartfelt congratulations.
