Gulu City to Name Road After Prof. Openjuru
The Mayor of Gulu city, His Worship Alfred Okwonga has revealed plans of naming a road after Prof. Openjuru George Ladaah, the Vice Chancellor of Gulu University.
This came out in his communication during the heroic welcome of Prof. Openjuru from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Gulu city after receiving an accolade for African Educationist of the year 2023 On March, 17th 2024.
Okwonga said the award has put not only Gulu University but the entire Gulu city, Northern Region and Uganda on the global map which is worth celebrating.
The mayor reveals that the city will soon have an archive for Heroes and Achievers and Prof. Openjuru shall be profiled and archived as one of the Heroes of Acholi land who has done tremendous job in improving the education sector in the region.
The Gulu University Guild President Francis Okot also shares the same sentiment with the city mayor. He therefore, proposes the New University Library be named after Prof. Openjuru for his great work.
The event which took place from Faculty of Agriculture and Environment on Sunday 17th March, 2024 was graced by Betty Aol Ocan, the Gulu city Woman Member of Parliament who commended Prof. Openjuru for putting the University high in the international scene.
The welcome ceremony saw Prof. Openjuru showered with praises by students, staff, political leaders, and the general public at large for his unwavering commitment to education and community development in Acholi subregion, Uganda. and Africa.
Theresa Mary Obbo, the Chairperson Gulu University Council who led the team accompanying Prof. Openjuru for the award ceremony at the 12th African Leadership Magazine’s Persons of the Year Awards held last Friday, March 15th, 2024, at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia appreciated him for the hard-earned award conferred by the African Leadership Magazine in the United Kingdom, celebrating his outstanding leadership and excellence in Education.
Obalim Christopher, the Deputy Gulu University Secretary said Prof. Openjuru’s recognition with the prestigious title of African Educationist of the Year 2023 will remain a permanent mark in the history of the University.
Dr. Colins Okello, the Dean of Students Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, who represented the Deputy Vice chancellor of the University commended the professor for garnering 81.57 percent of the votes in an online pool conducted in December 2023.
Speaking at the welcome ceremony, the jubilant Prof. Openjuru dedicated the award to the students and the entire staff of Gulu University, arguing that he wouldn’t have been awarded if he was not a Vice Chancellor.
