Gulu beats Makerere at Inter-University Human Rights Law Moot


A panel of Justices of Court of Appeal and Judges of the High Court of Uganda, chaired by Justice Eva Luswata announced Gulu University on the evening of October, 25th ,2024 as the winner of the National Inter-University Gender and Human Rights Law Moot Competition organised by FIDA Uganda at Makerere University.

Despite Pressure of being away from their home ground, Ochwo John Issac, Amanya Belinda and Nakalule Hajarah all students of Gulu University put up a spirited fight to beat Makerere University in the final of the competition.

Ochwo John Isaac of Gulu University was also declared as the best orator of the moot competition.
Prof. Openjuru George Ladaah the Gulu University Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude to the Faculty of Law team for the great work they are doing. According to Prof.Openjuru, the win is a clear demonstration of Gulu University Faculty of Law positioning herself as one of the giants in the Country.

“Over the years, our students have been excellently performing at Law Development Centre during their legal practice bar courses and indeed the Faculty of Law is a rising giant in the country, we are proud”. Prof.Openjuru said.
Gulu, Makerere, Nkumba and Kampala International University were the four Universities that reached the semi finals after submissions of their cases to the organisers.

The competition was themed “Family Law Reform Now! Bridging the Gender Gap in Access to Land as a Productive Resource”.
Susan Baluka, Manager Strategic Litigation at FIDA Uganda said Uganda is inspiring aspiring lawyers in gender focused litigation in order to contribute to gender jurisprudence in the court of law geared towards gender responsive family law reform.
