DVC AA Challenges Youth to Embrace Innovation at Roots Africa Annual Symposium

Gulu University Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, Prof. Okello David Owiny, has challenged university students in Africa to take charge of their future by embracing innovation and developing solutions to societal challenges.

He noted that the education sector has undergone significant transformation, including the adoption of competency-based approaches that place greater emphasis on practical skills, creativity and the ability to apply knowledge beyond the classroom.

Prof. Owiny made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing students from five universities participating in the Roots Africa and Gulu University Annual Symposium, Quiz and Innovation Competition.

The symposium brought together young agricultural innovators from universities including Gulu University, Muni University, Uganda Martyrs University, Mountain of the Moon University and Liberia International Christian College.

Cedric Nwafor, Executive Director of Roots Africa, applauded Gulu University for hosting the event, saying his organization would continue to inspire and support young agricultural innovators across Africa.

He said Africa needs a new generation of change-makers capable of developing innovative solutions to the continent’s challenges.
Muni University emerged the overall winner in the community impact solutions pitching competition with its Swine Farm Solutions, followed by Gulu University with OBO Agriventures, while Liberia International Christian College took third place.

In the Business Track, Gulu University emerged winner with Muffy Foods, followed by Uganda Martyrs University with Pearl Avocado, while Agro-Ambassadors from Liberia International Christian College came third.

The participating universities showcased innovative agribusiness initiatives, particularly in value addition and the development of practical solutions aimed at improving livelihoods and addressing community challenges.

The symposium provided students with an opportunity to demonstrate how innovation, entrepreneurship and agricultural value addition can contribute to Africa’s socio-economic transformation.
