Gulu University Conducts Sensitization Training for Support Staff on Safeguarding and GBV

Gulu University held a one-day sensitization programme for support and administrative staff in the Main Hall on 16th June 2026, aimed at strengthening awareness and understanding of safeguarding, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in institutional frameworks, and reporting mechanisms.
The training, organized under the theme “Safeguarding, GBV, Institutional Frameworks and Reporting Mechanisms,” brought together support staff and administrative personnel to enhance their knowledge and capacity in creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful working environment within the university. Participants were then welcomed by the Gender Mainstreaming Unit, which outlined the objectives of the sensitization meeting and emphasized the importance of safeguarding and professional conduct in the workplace.

A key session led by, Dr. Alidri Agatha, focused on understanding Gender-Based Violence, workplace harassment, and discrimination. Through interactive presentations and discussions, participants explored different forms of GBV and their impact on individuals and institutions.
The training continued with a presentation by, Dr. Stella Laloyo, who highlighted safeguarding risks within the university environment and the responsibilities of support staff in preventing and responding to safeguarding concerns. Participants engaged in case studies and plenary discussions to better understand their roles in promoting safety and protection.
Following a health break, Dr. Doreen Chemutai, presented various institutional frameworks that guide the university’s response to safeguarding and misconduct. These included the Gender Policy, Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy, Safeguarding Policy, Disability Policy, HIV/AIDS Policy, and whistleblowing mechanisms. The session provided participants with a deeper understanding of the policies available to protect staff and students.

The afternoon sessions were facilitated by, Mr. Okot Walter, who guided participants through reporting, referral, and response mechanisms for safeguarding and GBV cases. Through demonstrations and group discussions, participants learned the appropriate reporting pathways and procedures for handling incidents responsibly and confidentially.
“The world suffers not because of the actions of bad people but because of the silence of good people”, said Mr. Okot Walter.

The programme concluded with closing remarks from, Deputy vice chancellor, Prof. Davy David Okello Owiny, who stressed on the need for every staff to have emotional intelligence, knowledge on policies and frame works and the human resource manually to know what is required of them in order to defend themselves when in tough situations.
