57 awarded grants under BSU phase 4 Projects


Gulu University Building Stronger University-BSU phase 4 project has awarded 57 beneficiaries with grants. The awardees received their letters of awards in a colorful ceremony at the Gulu University New Library on Tuesday 30th July, 2024.

The BSU Project Chairperson for Gulu University, Prof. Charles Okumu said the awards were categorized into five with each taking in different numbers of recipients. The 57 BSU beneficiaries received grants under the following categories; PhD Under 40 (04), PostDoc (06), PhD Start-up (11), PhD Completion (09), and Master Completion (27).

Dr. Agatha Alidri, BSU Project Coordinator for Gulu University said it was a very competitive process with so many showing interest in the scholarship but the team finally zeroed down on 57 outstanding applicants who made it to the final list and received the awards. The vigorous selection process saw 15 female and 42 male awarded the grants with 1 female on PostDoc, 2 on PhD Under 40, 4 under PhD start-up and 8 female in the category Master Completion.

The Care-Taker Vice Chancellor of Gulu University, Dr. Daniel Komakech congratulated the grant recipients and encouraged them to work hard towards achieving what is ahead.

The Gulu university legal officer, Moses Omara cautioned the beneficiaries against diverting the grants into other projects. He emphasized that what the awardees are signing is not just Memorandum of Understanding-(MO) but a commitment to accomplish the purpose for which the grants were awarded. Representative of the awardees, Dr. Okecho Chombo, a senior lecturer at the department of education and humanity, Gulu University called on his fellows to support one another to be able to realize collective achievement, leaving no one behind.

The Gulu University Secretary, David Obol Otori, also a BSU beneficiary who spoke on behalf of management said the 57 who received the awards should work together with administrators of the university arguing that working together yields more fruits. BSU phase 4 project which was launched at Gulu University on 4th June, 2024 is funded by Danida. 

The project is focusing on Lifelong Education and new ways of learning: Problem- based, hybrid and eLearning. Another focus point of the project is Sustainable Development and Climate Change Mitigation: Innovation, education and community engagement. The project is also focusing on Post-conflict Policies and practices: Hosts and Refugees, Transitional Justice; and Health and Technologies: Health Rights and Changing Gender Relationships.
