Prof. Mwaka Amos Deogratius

Professor

Prof. Mwaka is an Internal Medicine Physician, a Medical Oncologist and Health Services Researcher with particular interest in Cancer Early Detection in order to improve survival from cancers. Prof. Mwaka has focused the spotlight on the critical role of health literacy and cancer symptoms awareness in fostering prompt health seeking for symptoms suggestive of cancers. He has expertise and confidence in clinical, health services and population-based researches involving use of both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Prof. Mwaka has a solid training in biomedical sciences, having qualified as a general medical doctor and then later undertaken specialized training in Internal Medicine at master level. Before engaging in scientific and health services research, Prof. Mwaka undertook a comprehensive training in epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Washington (UW), Seattle, USA during 2008 – 2009. The training at the UW included clinical training in Medical Oncology and Haematology. During September 2009 to December 2010, Prof. Mwaka engaged in clinical oncology practice at the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI). From March 2010 to November 2016, through the support of Rotary International, Prof.Mwaka spearheaded a team that set up a state-of-the-art cancer treatment centre at St. Francis hospital, Nsambya where he served as consultant Physician and Medical Oncologist on part time basis. Prof. Mwaka was one of the pioneer physician specialists that started the Master of Medicine program of Uganda Martyrs University at St Francis hospital, Nsambya.

Research Interests

Prof. Amos Deogratius Mwaka’s research is grounded in a multidisciplinary approach that integrates clinical medicine, public health, and health systems research, with the overarching goal of improving health outcomes in low-resource settings. A central area of focus is cancer early detection and timely diagnosis, particularly addressing the persistent challenge of late presentation that significantly affects survival rates in sub-Saharan Africa. His work places strong emphasis on health literacy, awareness of cancer symptoms, and health-seeking behaviour as critical drivers of early diagnosis and improved patient outcomes.

In the field of health services research, his interests include examining systemic barriers to accessing quality cancer care, such as delays in diagnosis, inequities in service delivery, and challenges within patient referral and navigation systems. His research employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, enabling a comprehensive understanding of clinical outcomes alongside patient experiences and broader social and structural determinants of health.

Another key research area is the intersection between traditional and complementary medicine and conventional healthcare systems. This includes exploring how cultural beliefs and practices influence treatment decisions, with the aim of informing more culturally responsive and integrated models of care.

His research portfolio also extends to infectious and neurological conditions, including nodding syndrome, as well as broader environmental and social determinants of health. More recently, this has expanded to include climate change and health, with a focus on its impact on vulnerable populations, particularly refugees and host communities in northern Uganda, and the development of evidence-based adaptation strategies.

In addition, there is a growing interest in patient and public involvement in clinical research, aimed at ensuring that research priorities, design, and implementation are aligned with community needs and are socially relevant and acceptable.
