Research Interests
Prof. Amos Deogratius Mwaka’s research is grounded in a multidisciplinary approach that integrates clinical medicine, public health, and health systems research, with the overarching goal of improving health outcomes in low-resource settings. A central area of focus is cancer early detection and timely diagnosis, particularly addressing the persistent challenge of late presentation that significantly affects survival rates in sub-Saharan Africa. His work places strong emphasis on health literacy, awareness of cancer symptoms, and health-seeking behaviour as critical drivers of early diagnosis and improved patient outcomes.
In the field of health services research, his interests include examining systemic barriers to accessing quality cancer care, such as delays in diagnosis, inequities in service delivery, and challenges within patient referral and navigation systems. His research employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, enabling a comprehensive understanding of clinical outcomes alongside patient experiences and broader social and structural determinants of health.
Another key research area is the intersection between traditional and complementary medicine and conventional healthcare systems. This includes exploring how cultural beliefs and practices influence treatment decisions, with the aim of informing more culturally responsive and integrated models of care.
His research portfolio also extends to infectious and neurological conditions, including nodding syndrome, as well as broader environmental and social determinants of health. More recently, this has expanded to include climate change and health, with a focus on its impact on vulnerable populations, particularly refugees and host communities in northern Uganda, and the development of evidence-based adaptation strategies.
In addition, there is a growing interest in patient and public involvement in clinical research, aimed at ensuring that research priorities, design, and implementation are aligned with community needs and are socially relevant and acceptable.
