Teaching Assistant


Dr. Herbert Ayiiko is a Medical doctor and Teaching Assistant in the Department of Internal Medicine at Gulu University. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Gulu University and has strong academic and clinical interest in Internal Medicine, with a particular focus on Infectious diseases and cardiology.

Dr. Ayiiko has over seven years of clinical experience, including work with Médecins Sans Frontières and Medical Teams International, where he managed a wide range of medical conditions in resource-limited and refugee settings. This experience strengthened his ability to deliver high-quality care under challenging conditions.

He has also actively contributed to clinical research through roles at the Makerere University Lung Institute and Global Health Uganda, including studies on vaccine trials and severe malaria and its Risk to the Brain. He is trained in Good Clinical Practice and Human Subject Protection, with a solid understanding of Research ethics and Methodology.

In his current role, he is involved in teaching, mentorship, and supporting the training of undergraduate medical students in Internal Medicine. His academic interests are centered on infectious and cardiovascular diseases, with a focus on improving diagnosis, management, and outcomes in low-resource settings.
Dr. Ayiiko is committed to advancing clinical practice, research, and medical education, with a long-term goal of contributing to academic Internal Medicine and cardiology in Uganda.

Research Interests

Dr. Ayiiko Herbert is a Medical officer with a growing focus in cardiology and infectious diseases, particularly the intersection of infections and cardiovascular health in resource limited settings.

He is passionate about strengthening Uganda’s health system through clinical research, quality improvement, and medical education.

Mentoring students and junior doctors remains central to his practice as he equips the next generation of clinicians to serve with competence and compassion across Uganda’s regional hospitals.

    Dr. Ayiiko Herbert - Responsibilities included participant screening, clinical follow-up, adverse-event monitoring, community engagement, and implementation of outbreak-response vaccination protocols within high-risk populations
    Dr. Ayiiko Herbert - Medical Officer - contributing to clinical management, patient monitoring, neurological assessment, and research activities aimed at understanding the neurological consequences and long-term outcomes associated with severe malaria infections.
