Ms. Betty Adoch is an Assistant Lecturer of Geography at Gulu University with over 20 years of teaching experience across lower and higher education institutions. she is currently a PhD Fellow at the Department of Geography, Geo-Informatics and Climatic Sciences, Makerere University, where she is pursuing doctoral research on land conflicts and livelihood nexus in post-conflict urban settings, with a focus on Gulu City, Northern Uganda.
Betty is a recipient of a prestigious PhD scholarship under the Migration, Urbanisation and Conflict in Africa (MUCA) project, which supports advanced interdisciplinary research on migration, urban transformations, and conflict dynamics in Africa. Her research interests include land governance, land conflicts, urbanisation, migration, livelihoods, displacement, refugee studies, climate change adaptation, and post-conflict recovery.
She has demonstrated a strong capacity for research and grant acquisition, having secured several competitive independent research grants, including funding from the British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) in 2024 and Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund (MAKRIF) in 2024. Her funded studies have focused on urban refugees’ social capital and livelihoods, land conflict resolution mechanisms, and socio-environmental challenges affecting vulnerable populations.
In recognition of her growing scholarly contribution, Betty was awarded a PhD mobility grant to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway, to strengthen international research collaboration and academic exchange in 2025. She has also participated in several fully sponsored international academic engagements, including an international conference supported by the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI), Lisbon, Portugal in 2023, Refugee-Led Research Hub (RLRH) festival in 2024, Nairobi, Kenya, as well as scholarly writing workshop organized by the Rift Valley Institute in 2024, Nairobi, Kenya.
Beyond research, Betty is actively engaged in teaching, mentorship, and academic supervision. She has supervised numerous Bachelor’s research projects in geography and related disciplines, guiding students through proposal development, field data collection, analysis, and dissertation writing. She remains committed to advancing academic excellence through impactful teaching, research, mentorship, and community engagement.
