Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The department is committed to improving maternal and perinatal health outcomes and contributes toward reducing maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3.7 and 5.6 (SDG 3.7 and SDG 5.6) and the Government of Uganda Vision 2040, targets 10 and 12 on maternal health improvements. Through research, grants, partnerships, and donations, the department has implemented several impactful projects that contribute to the advancement of the University’s vision and mission. One of its landmark achievements is the establishment of the Gulu University Sexual and Reproductive Health Resource Centre (GU-SRHRC) Simulation Laboratory, founded in 2022 to strengthen pre-service and in-service training in Sexual and Reproductive Health. Since its inception, the Centre has evolved into a regional hub for clinical simulation, multidisciplinary training, and practical skills acquisition.

The department maintains strong collaborations with both local and international institutions, including Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor, Ministry of Health Uganda, Simulation for Life at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Makerere University, Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Uganda (AOGU), East, Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ECSACOG), Center for International Reproductive Health Training (CIRHT), and St. Paul’s Mellenium Hospital, Ethiopia. Through excellence in education, research, innovation, and community engagement, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology continues to play a vital role in advancing reproductive, maternal, and newborn health in Uganda and the wider region.
