Gulu University graduates 1,431 students on 21st graduation ceremony 2025


Gulu University has graduated over 1,431 students on its 21st graduation ceremony which took place on Friday 28th November, 2025 from the Gulu University Sports Ground.
The Gulu University Vice Chancellor Prof. George Ladaah Openjuru congratulated the graduands for their resilience, discipline, and determination since they studied under unique circumstances including periods of economic hardship, post-pandemic adjustments, and rapid technological change.

The VC also boasts of the expansion of Gulu University since its inception in 2002.
“We have expanded our programme portfolio to 83 academic programmes, including new postgraduate offerings aligned to national development priorities. The student population has steadily increased from 5,900 to over 7,000 due to increased visibility and popularity of Gulu University,” Prof. Openjuru says.
Mrs. Theresa Mary Obbo, the Chairperson Gulu University Council urged the graduands to be ambassadors of change and preachers of Community Transformation.
“We as a University, are for Community Transformation. We send you out there to remain relevant to your workplaces and communities as instruments and agents of transformation. Wherever you will be, be our very good ambassadors by championing community transformation within the Vision plan of the Government of Uganda 2040,” Mrs. Obbo said.

Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, the Chancellor of Gulu University commended the tireless efforts of the university staff and management that saw the graduates walking out of the university with their transcripts and certificates for the first time in the history of the university.
“I commend the Gulu University staff for their dedication towards work, which has led to graduates receiving their valuable certificates and transcripts today. They can now present themselves confidently with their academic papers for employment” the Chancellor joyfully said.


In her speech presented by Dr. Erick Gitta, the Senior Education Officer at Ministry of Education and Sports, Hon. Minister of Education and Sports, the First Lady, Janet K. Museveni called upon graduates to use the knowledge acquired and come up with innovations that address the current climate change challenges being faced in the country.

In his address read by Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, the Prime Minister of Uganda, H.E President Yoweri Museveni encouraged Gulu University to continue teaching courses that are relevant to the job market and national development in order to combat high graduate unemployment in Uganda.

Notable political figures attended the 21st graduation ceremony including Hon. Norbert Mao, Minister for Justice and Constitutional affairs, Hon. Betty Aol Ocan, Gulu city Woman MP and Hon. Anthony Akol, MP for Kilak North among others.
