Gulu is best Public University in Uganda

Gulu University on Thursday 27th November 2025, was awarded for being the best public university in Uganda at the 13th visionaries of Uganda awards from Serena Hotel in Kampala.

This award was handed by the Minister of Karamoja Hon. Peter Lokeris, the Egyptian Ambassador, H.E Monzer Selim and Minister of State for Transport and Works, Francis Musa Ecweru to the Deputy University Secretary, Oballim Christopher who represented the Vice- Chancellor of Gulu University. He was also accompanied by other staff like the university Librarian, Dr Clement Claire Lutaaya including Dr Ocaya Anthony the care taker Director Quality Assurance.

The event ran under the theme “recognizing and celebrating visionary leadership for continued sustainable inclusive socioeconomic transformation of Uganda.”

Award
The event was presided over by the Vice President of Uganda, Her Excellency, Jessica Alupo. The event is organized annually to recognize and prize organizations and individual actors who lead their organizations and render services in a way that accelerates the realization of Uganda’s long term development objectives and priorities enshrined under the Vision 2040 and the currently ongoing National Development Plan (NDP 4).

Alupo said the awards event is in line with the President’s determination to transform Uganda from being a subsistence economy into a middle-income country through socio-economic interventions as is enshrined and is well stipulated under Vision 2040 and the constituent NDPs. The current one is NDP4 and it articulates the things and interventions the NRM government intends to undertake to transform Uganda in an inclusive manner that ensures no one is left behind.

Since the year 2013, the leadership of the National Planning Authority (NPA) closely working with the Uganda Visionaries Advisory Board has been organizing the Visionaries of Uganda awards event. Those recognized at the event are individuals leading and doing work under sectors like water, health, education, ICT, construction, oil & gas, security services provision, trade, commerce, mining and others.
This award is among the many other accolades Gulu University has been receiving over the years for its outstanding performance in the education sector.

Gulu University has also been recently awarded “Most Impactful University in Rural Transformation and Community Development” at the 3rd Edition of African Academia Conference and Awards 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda.

The University has also previously been recognized for its impact at a national level, including being named the Best Public University of the Year 2024 at the 12th edition of the Visionaries Awards, an event organized by the National Planning Authority and the Visionaries Board to celebrate institutions working towards Uganda’s Vision 2040.
