A brief overview of the Languages and Literature Department
A warm welcome from the Department of Languages and Literature. This Department was established in 2004/5 to train teachers of English and Literature under the then Faculty of Science Education. The programmes offered by the Department comprised two closely related core disciplines: English Language and Literature in English. English is a vital way of communicating in Uganda’s public spaces as well as in the world.
Through studying English Language and Literature in English, people learn how to contribute to a wide range of discourses and to value their own voices and the voices of others. The programmes provide the skills one needs to take a stand, to research and evaluate information in an academic and workplace environment in Uganda. They also enable one to develop skills in communication competencies in order to engage with learning across any curriculum in Uganda.
This Department is a perfect model for students who would wish to widen their scope in language and literary studies and communication skills. All the courses offered aim to produce students who are grounded in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The students are also exposed to a wide range of literary works across the globe and various research skills which are a requirement in academia.
