Dr. Stephen Langole

Senior Lecturer


Stephen Langole (PhD) is a senior lecturer at the Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies (IPSS) of Gulu University in Nothern Uganda. Dr. Stephen Langole majored in Peace and Conflict Studies for his PhD and holds Master degrees in Peace Education (UPEACE), and in Women Studies (MAK). Stephen is the current Head of Department, Peace and Security Studies of the IPSS and previously served as director of the institute (2016-2020). He was a PI of a research project at the institute «Governing Transitions in Northern Uganda, Trust and Land». He was a coordinator of Community Outreach Peace Project (COPP) of the institute, a senior researcher of Imagining Gender Futures in Northern (IMAGENU) Project of the institute. Currently he is a senior researcher on «Post-conflict Policies and Practices in Northern Uganda: Transitional Justice and Refugees» under the Building Stronger Universities (BSU) Project of Gulu University. He was a member on the Forum on Environmental Justice in Northern Uganda (2018) and was a member of African Studies Association (2014-2016). He was also a member of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) (2012).
I am very keen about peacebuilding more broadly but particularly about the transformation of our youth livelihoods while taking care of their diversity. I hope to achieve this through formal and non-formal education, mentorship, research and career guidance. I am also keen about environmental protection and is a director of a company called Premier Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability Initiative with community transformation agenda on the environmental issues.

Post-cnflict recovery, peacebuilding and conflict mitigation, hunger, famine and food security, land governance, gender justice, environmental justice, genertional relationships in post-conflict recovery, mobility and migration, refugees, child labour and livelihoods.

I have been a consultant on “The Nature of Land Conflicts in Nwoya District” for ZOA, an NGO (2015); and part of consultant on “Youth Taxonomy and Youth Vulnerability in Acholi Sub-region for the UN Resident Coordination Office (2010); on “Learning on Gender in Africa (LOGiCA) under World Bank/CARE project (2011) and on the “Worst Forms of Child Labour in Southern Sudan” for the University of Bradford/ ILO (2009) and on “Mapping Humanitarian Assistance in Lira District” for the World Food Programme (2009). Others were expert assignments for COMESA: “Conflict Vulnerability Assessment and Early Warning System for Ethiopia (2010); “War Economies in COMESA Region” (2008); Methodologies and Formulae for Calculating Costs of Conflict in COMESA Region (2007).
