Dr. Saidat Nakitto

Senior Lecturer


Dr Saidat Nakitto is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Gulu University, where she serves as the Dean. She holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University, a Master of Laws degree from the University of Nottingham (UK), and a PhD in Law from Brunel University (UK). She is also the former Dean of Law at the Islamic University in Uganda. She is passionate about teaching, research, and community engagement. She is an inspirational academic with over 15 years of experience in teaching and administration, dedicated to creating a supportive environment that promotes students’ academic success. She engages in collaborative research projects with researchers from diverse disciplines. She engages in collaborative research projects with researchers from diverse disciplines. She is currently participating in the Institutional University Cooperation (IUC) project for partnership between Flemish universities in Belgium and Gulu University, entitled “Strengthening the capacity of Gulu University in sustainable agri-food systems development for inclusive socioeconomic transformation of refugee-host communities in Northern Uganda.” She is the local leader for sub-project 6 on “Refugee-Host Relations for Sustainable Agri-food Systems in Northern Uganda (RHORSAN).

She participated in the Micro Course Development project on menstrual health for community educators, funded by the Commonwealth of Learning, and her work package is “Menstrual Health Rights”. The course was piloted in Lira District to promote community awareness on menstrual health rights and build the capacity of the community educators for lifelong learning. She co-authored a book entitled “Criminal Law in Uganda & Islamic Criminal Law: A Comparative Study (IIIT East Africa, 2022) under the IIIT Book writing project. She also participates in several academic programs, especially at the postgraduate level, where she supervises and examines graduate students at universities such as the University of the Western Cape and the Islamic University in Uganda. She is an External Examiner for the International Anti-Corruption Law and Anti-Money Laundering Law programmes at the University of the Western Cape. She served as a peer reviewer for academic journals, including the Journal of African Law, Statute Law Review, and IUIU Comparative Law Journal. This has enhanced her collaboration with other stakeholders for societal transformation. Dr Saidat loves reading, writing, and meeting new people for networking purposes.
