University of Pavia in Italy seeks support to start MRI Capacity Building training at Gulu University


University of Pavia in Italy seeks support to start Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) training at Gulu University. MRI is a diagnostic scan that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of organs and structures inside the body, such as the brain, spinal cord, muscles, and joints.
In the whole of Northern Uganda medical facilities doesn’t have MRI scan making the services only accessible in Kampala the capital of Uganda. This means peasant farmers and majority of the population from post war conflict Northern Uganda do not have the capacity to afford the services factoring in transport among other needs.

A team of expert on MRI led by Prof. Neil Scolding who doubles as a visiting professor at Gulu University, Faculty of Medicine from Bristol University in the United Kingdom and Prof. Claudia Gandini Wheeler from University of Pavia in Italy intends to get funding from the Italian Cooperation to start a capacity building training of Trainers of Trainers (ToT) of MRI machine at Gulu university and subsequently get one machine at the university through the Faculty of Medicine.

The Team met the university management on Friday,14th, November 2025 and made their case known.
Prof. Openjuru, George Ladaah the Gulu University Vice-Chancellor told the team that Gulu University is in support of the partnership. He said whatever the partnership requires, the university shall be able to comply.
