Gulu University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Microbiology on Wednesday, October 15th of this year received a generous donation of three high-quality Olympus CH40 microscopes from Dr. Akihiro Kasuge from the Faculty of Medicine at Juntendo University, Department of Tropical Medicine in Japan.

This donation is a significant contribution to the ongoing research project titled “Epidemiology of Drug-Resistant Plasmodium falciparum Malaria in Africa.”

The project aims to build regional capacity for the detection and monitoring of drug-resistant strains of malaria, a major public health concern across sub-Saharan Africa. The newly donated microscopes will be used to strengthen diagnostic services and facilitate advanced laboratory investigations in both academic and clinical settings.

While receiving the donation on behalf of the University, Prof. Amos Deogratius Mwaka, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Gulu University, expressed profound appreciation to Dr. Kasuge and the Juntendo University team.
“We are deeply grateful for this timely and impactful donation. These microscopes will be instrumental not only in our research efforts but also in the training of our medical students,” said Prof. Mwaka.

He also added that students, many of whom go on to serve in rural and underserved communities, are to gain hands-on experience using advanced diagnostic tools, ultimately improving health outcomes across the region.

The partnership between Gulu University and Juntendo University highlights the significance of international collaboration in addressing global health challenges. It also reflects a shared commitment to enhancing local research capabilities and contributing to the worldwide fight against malaria.
