Gulu University Signs MOU with York University, Canada.
Gulu University has formalized a strategic partnership with Yoke University, Canada, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The Gulu University Vice Chancellor, Prof. George Ladaah Openjur,u and Prof. Syed Imran Ali from York University signed the agreement on Tuesday, 10th June 2025.
The agreement is aimed at building foundational data to enhance collaboration with international partners on water treatment and protection for refugees as well as accelerating joint initiatives in other relevant fields.
The MoU outlines mutual interests between Gulu University and York University, focusing on developing a robust framework for cooperation. This partnership spearheaded by Dr. Collins Okello, Dean Faculty of Agriculture and Environment at Gulu University is expected to leverage expertise from both institutions to address pressing societal challenges.
Prior to the official signing, representatives from York University led by Prof. Ali visited Ishaka District in Western Uganda to monitor ongoing projects related to refugees and water treatment. The team focused on assessing consumer protection measures and evaluating the effectiveness of the water treatment model implemented in the region.
Prof. Openjuru expressed strong appreciation for the intervention efforts in Ishaka District and emphasized the critical nature of water contamination issues in Uganda, highlighting itsconnection to the high spread of communicable diseases like typhoid.
This MoU signing marks a significant step towards strengthening international academic collaboration and addressing urgent community needs in line with the Gulu University motto “For Community Transformation.”
Gulu University and York University aim to contribute meaningfully to national development goals, particularly in the areas of agriculture, environment, and health through shared expertise and resources.
