Gulu university together with representatives from Royal College of Emergency Medicine (Uk), convened to discuss prospects to strengthen emergency care services in northern Uganda in November,10th ,2025.

The meeting chaired by the Deputy Vice Chancellor [DVC] Professor, Okello Divid Owiny, commenced with welcoming remarks and acknowledgements from both universities as well as stating the need for emergency medicine in northern Uganda.
Basing on the most recent accident that took place on Kampala, Gulu highway, Dr. charlotte Hardy Scolding an emergency medicine specialist from UK and a visiting professor at Gulu university and Lacor hospital said the purpose of their visit was to advocate for the immediate need for an emergency medicine master’s program at Gulu university.

She said the program has already been started at Mbarara university and Makerere university and can not progress without more centers being opened. Hence the need for Gulu university’s support to produce professional and qualified staff that can support the center in northern Uganda.
Proff. Okello, with support uploaded the idea and promised to put his effort into ensuring that the program is scheduled for the next intake at Gulu university. He also acknowledged that the need for the program is well justified and Gulu university has suitable candidates for the program.
“This program will help us support the community at a greater level as well as putting our resources like ambulances to greater use,” said the DVC.
Further discussions on the program implementation are continuing and we shall be updating you on progress.
