The meeting was officially opened by the Gulu university communications officer, Mr. James Onono Ojok, who talked about the importance of media and how it can affect one’s opportunities if not handled with care. He also noted that this initiative aligns well with Gulu University’s commitment towards community transformation.
“Inappropriate social media representation can tannish your brand and opportunities like jobs in particular organizations or even a Visa application,” said Mr. Onono.

Other trainers like, Atim Ruth, from Gender Tech and Nakwasa Robbin, spoke about challenges in the digital society and how to go about them, marketing on digital platforms like Facebook, X, Instagram and LinkedIn. This training also tackled topics like Mastering 21st century digital and media literacy.

TAGDev 2.0 is a successor program of the TAGDev 101 initiative which was implemented in Gulu University and Egerton University from 2016 to 2024 as a pilot on the transformation that African agricultural universities need to undertake to make the universities and the graduates contribute effectively to development.

Among other development outcomes, TAGDev 101 demonstrated significant success in nurturing young people coming from economically challenged backgrounds to become leaders driving societal change. The two universities exhibited flexibility in their admission processes, enabling young people who could not have competed favourably with other applicants to acquire university education. Many of the TAGDev 101 students went on to excel in their studies, often graduating at the top of their classes, and above all, engaging in economically and socially impactful endeavours.

Building on the success of TAGDev 101. TAGDev2.0 in partnership with RUFORUM and the Mastercard Foundation has expanded to numerous universities across the African continent. Participating institutions now include Africa University in Zimbabwe, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Morocco, the University of Bamenda in Cameroon, the University of the Free State in South Africa, the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, the University of Eldoret in Kenya, Malawi University of Science and Technology, Uganda Martyrs University, the National University of Agriculture in Benin, and the University of Port-Harcourt in Nigeria, alongside the original partners, Gulu University and Egerton University.
