EU Heads of Mission visit Gulu University
The European Union Heads of Mission, led by Jan Sadek, EU Ambassador to Uganda, visited Gulu University on Wednesday, 21st May 2025.
The delegation who paid courtesy to the Office of the Vice Chancellor before entering discussions on Transitional Justice systems in Northern Uganda was welcomed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Davy David Okello Owiny, and members of the University’s top management.
While discussing Post-Conflict Policies and Practices in Hosts and Refugees’ Transitional Justice systems in Northern Uganda, Ambassador Sadek commended Gulu University for its tremendous contributions in Transitional Justice and refugee studies, which has significantly impacted the Northern Region.
The Ambassador used the same occasion to launch Center of Excellence in Transitional Justice and Refugee Studies that will be stationed at the Gulu University Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies.
The Danish Ambassador to Uganda Signe Winding Albjerg also applauded the university for the great implementation of refugee and transitional justice studies being implemented under the Building Stronger Universities – BSU Phase 4 project funded by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Dr. Stella Laloyo Apecu, the Chief Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies at Gulu University, said the center will embark on carrying out research and documentation on transitional justice and refugee studies that will be a great knowledge bank for the next generations to come.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Okello Owiny on the other hand calls on the EU delegates to support research on Transitional Justice and not forget environment and climate change since it is one of the post-war challenges in Northern Uganda.
He also requested the delegates to join Gulu University in Lobbying for funds for the establishment of innovation hubs to support this research.
