Chancellor Praises University for pioneering Higher Education in Karamoja
Rt.Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, Uganda Prime Minister emeritus and current Chancellor of Gulu University has applauded Gulu university council and management for pioneering higher education in Karamoja region by following the 2016 directive of President Yoweri Museveni in establishing a university of Agriculture in Karamoja.
The Chancellor who was taken on a guided tour in October ,27th 2025 at the construction site for the Multi-Purpose Building of the Gulu University Constituency College of Agriculture in Nadunget Sub- County, Moroto district said he is impressed there is great development leading to start of programmes in the next Academic year.
The Chancellor also thanked President Yoweri Museveni Kaguta and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government for the visionary leadership in ensuring Karamoja is never left behind in development issues.
Mrs. Theresa Mary Obbo, the Chairperson university council said the university shall continue working closely with the community and stakeholders in Karamoja region to ensure that the university becomes a reality in Moroto.
Dr. Sidonia Angom Ochieng, the Taskforce Chairperson of the university in Moroto said development of the University is creating change in the livelihood and development of the people in the area since the project affected persons who gave their land did put the funds in to good use.
“When the University starts, we shall not forget the community of Nadunget. The Centre is also developing because of the compensation we gave to the people who gave their land”. Dr. Sidonia said.
Prof. Openjuru, George Ladaah, the Vice Chancellor said Gulu University is not new in supporting development of universities in greater northern Uganda and it explains the reason the president trusted management. “We gave birth to Lira University, we supported and had our hands in the development of Muni, Soroti and Busitema universities”. Openjuru said. He declared that the University project shall finally give birth to Moroto University.
Prof. Openjuru requested the chancellor to continue lobbying for the university so that the university project is completed on time.
The Multipurpose building in Moroto has lecture rooms, laboratories and office spaces for the start of the Constituent College of Agriculture in Moroto. This building is valued at UGX 39 billion and is being constructed by the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the commercial arm of the Uganda Ministry of Defence Forces.
