Master of Arts in Conflict Transformation Studies
Rationale
The Masters of Arts in Conflict Transformation Studies is fundamental because of the historical and capacity building gaps in the country. Northern Uganda, where Gulu University is located is a post-conflict society trying to rebuild itself; and given this background, conflict transformation skills are vital. Conflict transformation is a holistic approach to peace building that ensures that structural violence is reduced, access to justice increased, development opportunities are equitable and over all civic education and pluralism knowledge widespread. The programme, therefore, brings in a wide array of practitioners who then use the skills attained to transform their communities.
In addition, the programme provides the students with the opportunity to engage in research on related topics; these researches most of which are empirical can be used to engage government, policy makers and practitioners to improve services or reform policy for the populace. The programme also opens up students to the international epistemology on transformation and good governance, which can increase their theoretical underpinning.
Objectives of the Programme
The programme objectives are to enable students to:
1. Examine and apply existing knowledge in the field of peace, conflict and conflict transformation.
2. Generate theories for action for peace, justice and sustainable development.
3. Develop practical skills in conflict transformation.
Expected Outcomes
After completion of this programme, students will be able to;
1. Make links between theory, action and reflection, and generate, document and disseminate new knowledge and insights relevant to their work, thus further developing the field of peace and conflict transformation.
2. Handle conflict at all levels, including the interpersonal with increased sensitivity and resourcefulness, and take the opportunities to present these for sustainable development and community transformation.
3. Bring about constructive change in their societies through sharing their knowledge and skills, communicate effectively with a range of audiences at different levels and contribute to both local and global discourses on the subject of peace and conflict transformation.
