Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister (Katikkiro) Charles Peter Mayiga visited Gulu University on the 14th October 2023 with a delegation of his Ministers and Kingdom Officials.
The Prime Minister (Katikkiro) of Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga Visited Gulu University on the 14th of October 2023 with a delegation of his Ministers and kingdom officials.
In his speech, he thanked the management of Gulu University for allowing him to have an interaction with students from the Buganda Region and urged the students to emulate and respect the culture of the Acoli People.
“As you are here please, endeavor to learn the language as well and borrow the beautiful things Acoli culture teaches”. The Prime Minister advised.
“Uganda is big enough for all of us, to learn the language, appreciate the culture, respect the ways of the Acolis, because now we can’t have a close community with modernity”. Charles Peter Mayiga emphasized.
According to him, Education is liberation and the best thing that can happen in Northern Uganda with a devastating past. He emphasized that Education should not make people forget their culture though.
“If Education you receive also drives you away from your values, traditions, and norms then that Education is the one still keeping Africa backward”. He said.
Dr. Collins Okello, the Dean Faculty of Agriculture and Environment who was representing the Vice-Chancellor and management at the function informed the Buganda delegation led by the Prime Minister (Katikiro) that Gulu University respects and has collaborations with cultural institutions where he cited Gulu University-Hoima Campus as an initiation of the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom to have Higher Education advanced in the region.
Dr. Collins Okello also told the delegation that through respect for the cultural heritage, Gulu University was able to get innovation of Covilyce, an herbal remedy for COVID-19 that supported the treatment of Corona Virus during the COVID-19 pandemic championed by Dr. Alice Lamwaka Veronica as the Principal Investigator.
He told the Buganda Kingdom officials that Gulu University is open to partnership with the Cultural Institution.
“We have potential in cultural tourism, in the field of Medicine, and peaceful coexistence but we feel this potential has not been fully exploited”. Exclaimed Dr. Okello.
Dr. Okello also briefed the Buganda delegation on the students outreach learning model of Gulu University and assured the public that Gulu University with the Community oriented transformative model is still the best University in the world.
