Faculty of Agriculture and Environment

The Faculty of Agriculture and Environment was established in Gulu University in 2005. It is mandated to train manpower at undergraduate and graduate levels, carry out research, and provide outreach services in all aspects of Agriculture right from primary production to marketing.

It is strategically structured into six departments: Agronomy, Animal Production and Range Management, Biosystems Engineering, Environment and Natural Resource Management, Food Science and Postharvest Technology, and Rural Development and Agribusiness.The departments work together to contribute to community food security improvement, livelihoods and agricultural development in general.

Our training emphasizes hands-on skills development based on strong scientific background, entrepreneurial mentality, and strong attitude for sustainable use of natural resources and clean environment.

Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSc. Agric.) degree programme at Gulu University is built on the foundation of having all-round graduates equipped with practical skills that match current demands of various agriculture fields locally and internationally. The programme recognizes the significance of Agriculture in driving economic growth and development in Uganda and Africa in general, and is designed to contribute to achieving National Development Plan (2015/16 – 2019/20) and the Vision 2040 which collectively provide a framework for a transformed Ugandan society from a peasant to a modern and prosperous country within 30 years. It is also in line with the Science Agenda for Africa, the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Plan, and the agenda 2063 of the African Union which are all geared towards transforming agriculture to contribute effectively to economic growth in the continent. Specifically, the curriculum responds to three key development challenges that have persistently plagued Uganda and other countries in Africa: (i) poverty; (ii) food insecurity; and (iii) lack of employment for the youth. Therefore, practical enterprise development is streamlined in the curriculum to provide opportunity for moulding the graduate to create his/her own job and provide employment for other youth members of the society. In addition, community engagement is also integrated to provide opportunity for linking student enterprise development with community agricultural development and as such contribute to poverty reduction and food security improvement in households.

Programme Objectives
The objectives of the programme are:
1. Produce professionals and practitioners with sound theoretical knowledge, practical skills and positive attitude to contribute to agricultural development in Uganda and beyond
2. Develop a cadre of graduates with the capacity to establish and manage own profitable agri-enterprises, provide employment for others and thus contribute to employment creation
3. Develop graduates with capacity to undertake graduate training in agricultural sciences, thus contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field of agriculture and related sciences

Programme Learning Outcomes
On completion of the programme the graduate should be able to:
1. Work in various agri-industry-related sectors and provide advisory services to the community and other agri-business establishments
2. Develop and manage own profitable agri-enterprises and provide employment for the others
3. Advance his/her career in agricultural and related disciplines at postgraduate level

Admission Requirements
For admission leading the award of BSc. Agric., the candidate must satisfy the general minimum requirements of Gulu University. In addition, four avenues including direct entry, mature age scheme, diploma entry scheme and credit transfer are allowed:
1. Direct Entry. Candidates through this avenue must have:
i. Sat the Uganda Certificate of Education or its equivalent examination with passes in five approved subjects including a credit in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
ii. Obtained a principal pass in any two of Chemistry, Biology and Agriculture at Advanced Level at the same sitting.

2. Mature Age Entry Scheme Admission may be granted under the mature age entry scheme after passing the appropriate Mature Age Entry Examination.
3. Diploma Entry Scheme Admission may be granted if a candidate possesses a National Diploma or its equivalent of at least a Second Class standing or equivalent in agriculture, animal husbandry, veterinary, crop husbandry, fishery or other related disciplines, from recognized institutions.
4. Admission of students under credit transfer requires a recommendation of the Faculty Board and approval by Senate on the basis of studies undertaken at another recognized university or equivalent institution. In general, transfer of credits obtained from another University of similar system shall be considered after comparing the equivalent standard and the maximum transferable credits should not exceed 40% of the minimum requirement for the award.

Progamme Duration
The programme shall normally extend over a period of four years and each year consists of two semesters of 17 weeks each comprising fifteen (15) weeks of classes and two weeks (2) of examinations. There is recess term of 10 weeks for the first three years of study.

The Bachelor of Science in Food and Agribusiness (BFA) is a hybrid programme which encompasses both the business and entrepreneurial development/management and scientific/technical aspects of postharvest, food processing/value addition. The uniqueness of the programme is that it is designed to produce graduates with knowledge and skills to develop and manage own agri-food enterprises in addition to seeking employment and provision of advisory services in the agri-food sector. In addition, the BFA programme provides opportunity for the students to acquire knowledge and develop interdisciplinary skills in the science and business of food production alongside expert knowledge of human nutrition. The graduates of the BFA are expected to understand the business of food supply from the “paddock or farm-gate to plate” and will be equipped to drive innovation necessary for the sustainability of the food industry in the country and regionally. The compulsory recess term and/or industry placement/internship allows students to establish early links with agri-food value chain actors, and to develop an understanding of the workplace environment and employers’ expectation of the graduates. Because of the eminent lack of employment for young graduates experienced nationally and regionally, entrepreneurship and business development has been made an essential component of the BFA programme. It is intended to develop capacity of the graduates to establish and manage own micro-enterprises hence creating employment opportunities for other young people. Therefore, under the BFA programme, each student shall be guided to produce a financially sound and bankable business plan. The business plan shall be subjected to competition for funding under the Student Entrepreneurship Scheme of the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment.

Programme Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to enable the student to:
1. Acquire theoretical knowledge, practical skills and positive attitudes needed to undertake postharvest management, process and add value to primary food produce.
2. Develop capacity to manage profitable own agri-food enterprises, work in various agri-food industry related establishments, and undertake consultancy services in the agri-food sector.
3. Develop capacity to undertake postgraduate training in related fields such as food biosciences, agribusiness, agricultural and food economics, agricultural and applied economics and business administration, etc.

Programme Learning Outcomes
On completion of the programme the graduate should be able to:
1. Undertake postharvest management, process and add value to primary food produce, identify opportunities in the agri-food sector, plan, establish and manage profitable own agri-food enterprises.
2. Work in various agri-food industry-related establishments and provide advisory services in the agri-food sector.
3. Advance his/her educational career in the agri-food sector through postgraduate training in related fields such as food biosciences, agribusiness, agricultural and food economics, agricultural and applied economics and business administration, etc.

Admissions requirements
For admission to the programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Science in Food and Agribusiness (BFA), a candidate must satisfy the general minimum entrance requirements of Gulu University.

Specific Requirements for BFA
Admission to the programme is through three avenues, namely: direct entry, mature age scheme, and diploma entry scheme.

Direct Entry
Candidates through this avenue must have:
i. Sat the Uganda Certificate of Education or its equivalent examination with passes in five approved subjects including a credit in Mathematics and English
ii. Obtained a principal pass in both Chemistry and Biology at Advanced Level at the same sitting.
The Advanced level subjects shall be weighted according to whether they are Essential, Relevant or Desirable. For purposes of computing entry points, the Advanced level subjects shall be weighted and grouped as below:-

Essential 3.0:  Any two best done of Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Food & Nutrition and Mathematics
Relevant 2.0:  Third best done of Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Food & Nutrition, Mathematics, Physics and Geography
Desirable 1.0: General Paper and Sub-Mathematics or Sub-Computer

Mature Age Entry Scheme

Diploma Entry Scheme

The Biosystems Engineering programme is ingeniously designed to help students acquire a strong theoretical background as well as to gain real world engineering experiences during the four years of study, thus helping them to become relevant to the job market. Core competencies of Biosystems Engineering graduates of the Department include provision of engineering support in:

1) Food production and value addition: Specifically design and maintenance of food production processing and preservation technologies, including agricultural mechanisation, irrigation, farm buildings, food storage facilities and value addition technologies.

2) Environmental management: Treatment and utilization of solid waste and wastewater, specifically design of incinerators, landfills, and composting plants for organic wastes, lagoons and constructed wetlands for treatment of sewerage and other liquid organic wastes,

3) Soil and water resources conservation: Floods and drought forecasting and management. Design of hydraulic structures such as valley tanks, dams, culverts, and weirs. Design of soil conservation structures like terraces and contour bands. Treatment of potable water and development of shallow wells, boreholes and protected springs.

4) Renewable energy production: Design of improved bioenergy technologies such as biomass stoves, gasifier plants and biogas digesters. Solar energy systems including solar thermal applications in water heating, crop drying and photovoltaic systems for applications which require electricity. Design and management of micro- and pico-power plants from renewable resources such as hydropower, wind and geothermal energy.
Students are also grounded with the 21st Century graduates competencies like entrepreneurship, communication, teamwork, networking, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills.

Accreditation and affiliation
The BSc in Biosystems Engineering programme at Gulu University is accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education and recognised by the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE). All undergraduate students register with the UIPE as graduate members.

Current agricultural training programs produces graduates who are neither adequately grounded to serve as social entrepreneurs nor as knowledge manager for agri-enterprises development.

Specifically, there is a Lack of professionals in agricultural communication and broadcasting using modern techniques, methods, and equipment of documentation for enhancing agricultural actors’ learning and visibility of agricultural innovations.

This need has necessitate the development of Bachelor of Science in Agri-entrepreneurship and Communication Management (Bsc.ACM). The programme is intended to produce practical agri-entrepreneurs and communicators capable of establishing own profitable agri-enterprises as effectively communicate agricultural information.

Programme Objectives
BSc. ACM aims to produce agricultural professionals with;

  • Theoretical knowledge, practical skills and positive attitudes needed to engage in agrientrepreneurship and agricultural communication
  • Skills and capacity to own and manage profitable agri-enterprises,
    work in various agri-industry and related sectors.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of BSc. ACM, we anticipate a graduate capable of:
a) Identifying opportunities in the Agri-industry, plan, establish and manage profitable own agri-enterprises.
b) Working in various agri-industry-related establishments and provide advisory services in the agricultural and agri-business sector.
c) Advancing his/her educational career in the agri-industry and related sectors through postgraduate training in related fields such as agribusiness, business administration, and agricultural communication and rural innovations.

Eligibilty
For admission to BSs. ACM, a candidate must satisfy the general minimum entrance requirements of Gulu University. For candidates who intend to Join BSc. ACM through direct entry must have:

  • Sat the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent examination with passes in five approved subjects including a credit in Mathematics.
  • Obtained at Least two principal passes in any of Physics, Chemistry,Biology,Economics, Agriculture, Geography,Entrepreneurship and Mathematics at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) at the same sitting.

Programme Duration
The degree programme shall extend over a period of four years and each year consists of two semesters of 17 weeks each comprising fifteen (15) weeks of classes and two weeks (2) of examinations. There shall be one recess term of 10 weeks for each of the first three years.

The Master of Science in Food Security and Community Nutrition (MSc. FSCN) degree porgramme is a unique graduate program developed in the Department of Food Science and Postharvest Technology (FSPHT), Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, Gulu University. The programme is premised upon the significance of the impact of food and nutrition security on human and national development. Since the World Food Summit in 1974 and 1996 ,FoodSecurity issues have been key on development portfolios in developing countries and globally and are also one of the indicators of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) under poverty eradication.

This Masters programme was developed with the philosophy of meeting the manpower needs for addressing the challenges of food insecurity, community nutrition and livelihoods. These have not been adequately covered by many of the graduate training programmes initiated in the country and in the region. In addition, there is need for more graduates to undertake problem-solving research on food and nutrition security to inform the policy formulation process. The approach in the M.Sc FSCN Curriculum hinged on building capacity for integrating nutrition and food security in all aspects of agricultural production, postharvest management and marketing processes in a holistic manner.

Programme Features
(i) Develop intellectual, problem solving capabilities and build the capacity of students to design and implement food and nutrition security programmes/interventions.
(ii) Respond to the need for sustainable food and nutrition security in the light of climate change.
(iii) Provide capabilities to undertake research for driving policy formulation to improve Food and Nutrition Security situation in the country and in the region.

Programme Objectives
1. Acquire advanced theoretical knowledge, practical skills and positive attitudes needed in addressing issues of food security and community nutrition
2. Develop capacity in intellectual inquiry and problem solving, research and policy, training and consultancy in food security and community nutrition for sustainable development.
3. Develop capacity to undertake research on food and nutrition issues to inform on policy.

Learning Outcomes
(a) Work with communities to address food and nutrition security challenges.
(b) Undertake research to contribute to community food and nutrition security improvement and to influence policy.

Admission Requirements
Applicants should possess honours’ degree in any of the following qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Bachelor of Agriculture, Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology, Bachelor of Science (General), Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, Medical degree or their equivalent qualifications from a recognizedUniversity.

Graduation Requirements
A student to graduate from the M.Sc. Food Security and Community Nutrition must satisfy the following conditions:
• Passing all prescribed courses
• M.Sc. Thesis Completion and pass Viva Voce examination
• Satisfactory completion of the Community Attachment.

Many graduate programmes in Agribusiness have been initiated in the Eastern, Central and Southern African regions however with vey limited numbers of graduates turning out as practising Agri-entreprenuers.
Therefore, this curriculum for MSc. Agri-Enterprises Development programme seeks to respond to this concern, it was developed collaboratively between Gulu and Egerton Universities in Uganda and Kenya respectively, the international Institute of of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR), the private sectors in the two countries and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) using a grand from Ford Foundation.

This programme is underpinned with the philosophy of intergrating value chain analysis, round table engagements and agri-entreprenurial development approaches in graduate learning facilitation and research. It is a two-year skills development focused academic programme. It is envisaged that the graduates will be facilitated to identify business development opportunities existing at different segments of the agri-value chain namely: production, processing, marketing, services and distribution. It is also of interest to produce well-grounded graduates with the right mix of competences of knowledge, skills and attitudes to undertake research for driving agribusiness development and influencing agribusiness policy formulation.

Programme Features
(i) A practical orientation on agribusiness development services and agri-entreprenuership with a strong focus on graduates developing business plans and supporting them to implement such plans.

(ii) Training of graduates using modern student-centered learning approaches including interactive and e-learning platforms.

(iii) A highly dynamic curriculum, evolving with lessons drawn from the industry and the agribusiness sector for continuous reveiw and improvement.

Programme Objective
1. Acquire advanced theoretical knowledge, practical skills and positive attitudes needed in addressing the challenges and responding to opportunies in the agribusiness sector.

2. Develop capacity in intellectual inquiry and problem solving, research and policy, training and consultancy in agri-enterprises deelopment.

3. Develop capacity to manage agribusiness enterprise at local, national, regional and international levels.

Learning Outcomes
(a) Stand as a proffessional grounded with the right mix of knowledge, skills and attitude competences to undertake research for driving agri-enterprises development and influencing agribusiness policy formulation.

(b) Identify opportunities in the agricultural sector and plan, develop, manage and own agri-enteprises as well as carrying out business development services consulting.

(c) Practice as an instructor in institutions of higher learning.

Admission Requirements
Applicants should possess honours’ degree in any of the following qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in any of the agricultural sciences, Bachelors of Science in Veterinary Medicine, Bachelor of Business Administration and any other economics related disciplines.

Graduation Requirements
A student to graduate from Master of Science in Agri-Enterprises Development must satify the following conditions:
