Gulu University gets Taekwondo sports equipment worth UGX 17 Million

Gulu University Taekwondo club has on Wednesday received Taekwondo sports equipment worth UGX 17 million from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Uganda. The consignment included 20 pairs of uniform, sheen guards, hand punching bags, head gears, handle punching bags, belts, and chest guard among others.

Gulu University Taekwondo coach, Andrew Ayella said the equipment is a nice gesture from the Korean Embassy after the University club participated in the online Ambassador’s cup open Taekwondo competition between May and July 2021.

“The competition was online and each club had to record a video with their fighting patterns and submit for judging and we were able to get 4 medals “said Ayella. Gulu University was able to receive a silver medal by Opiyo Felix Tabia in competition for age group of 20 to 30 meanwhile Okello Richard, Opiyo Denis Odong and Opiyo Jerrick all won bronze medals under the age group of 18 to 29.

According to Ayella, the club with full support from the University and the Public is determined to send more of its members to the National Taekwondo club with an impending Uganda national team selection for the Northern Region in September, 25th, 2021.    He also encouraged the staff to join the club for fitness purpose. Gulu University Vice- Chancellor Professor Openjuru George Ladaah applauded the team for the commitment they have demonstrated towards uplifting the name of the University and improving on their skills as an enterprise in their career.

According to him, the University would continue talking with the Korean Embassy at a strategic level to ensure Taekwondo sports is properly popularized in the sub region.
