The 2nd International Humanitarian Law Moot Competition

Gulu University emerged second after Cavendish University in the just concluded International Humanitarian Law Moot competitions organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) that was announced on Thursday 14th July 2022 from Imperial Royale Hotel.

Justice Mike Chibita who presided over the award ceremony thanked all the coaches for having had time with the participants who demonstrated knowledge and maturity during their deliberations. The students who defended Gulu University in the competition included Ejiku Justine, Ankunda Sheba and Nabongo Stanley where Ejiku, a year three student was awarded the best orator of the tournament and the entire team walked away with UGX 1.5 million with an accolade for the University.

Laker Gender Fancy Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Law who was the coach for the team expressed excitement that the hard work finally paid off. Gulu University Dean Faculty of Law Dr. Shadat Ssemakula said his faculty is on the right track to producing quality law students with records of top best performers at the Law Development Centre twice. “The faculty has proved its intellectual capacity”. Said the law don.

Gulu University Vice Chancellor Prof. George L. Openjuru Ladaah said the performance of the students at the competition confirms the commitment of the team at the Faculty of Law.” This is not the first time, our law students have continued to carry high the flag of the University and we are pleased with his award at hand, congratulations, congratulations “.  Prof, Openjuru couldn’t hide his excitement while commenting on the story.

The Judges of the moot competition this year included Justice Mike Chibita JSC, Justice Susan Okalany, Her Worship Harriet Ssali, Dr. Kabumba Busingye, Mr. James Nkubi and Ms. Jemma Arman. The completion was graced by Universities like Kampala International University, Cavendish University, Uganda Christian University, Islamic University in Uganda, Nkumba University among others.

About the Competition  

The Moot Competition is organized annually between Universities offering Bachelors of Law across the country and the students are judged on Knowledge of the Law, Application of the Law to the facts given and Oral presentation. The Moot also requires students to make submissions in moot scenarios before the International Court of Justice, International Criminal Court, and International Crimes Division of the High Court.
